Perception of the space by hearing was our primary focus. How do we perceive the space, while trying to forget about all the visual and tactile information. When thinking about the recording it might be compared to taking picture. But the recording (or the picture) is very static and represents the only focus. In order to achieve comprehensive idea of space the recording collage has to be made.
We started with the study of physical properties of the sound as a wave. That led us to think about the sound features such as echo and masking of the sounds. As a result small guessing game took place during out first presentation. The result was: the action in the space inform us about the characteristics of the space, while the action is the only we can make the conclusion very fast. On the other hand, when echo and masking started to play the role it caused the partial desorientation.
Our final product was split into two parts, both related to Ghent and both collages as well. First one is a starting point of sound so-called postcards. The recordings were made on different spots in the city, not necessary the most representative ones. How is the Ghent city today? Indisputably, under construction ;) . The language people talk, the street sounds – are people load or more calm, buskers at the market place, etc. Our postcard is sort of collage made of sound pictures merged in one piece. What if we could really such a postcards? The main difference with the traditional on would be that these would really show what does the city looks alike. (And the best thing is that you may do it yourself, as the message you want to introduce).
Secondly we tried to record the same action in different places. Steps sound differently with the relation to the space you are (narrow street, big square, etc). Furthermore the symbols of the city of Ghent are three towers. If you live close to them, you can know the bell song by heart. So how do thess sounds vary depending on the shape of the space? The second project is a city walk, made through the main square, as a collage of the steps (the sound produced by the action placed on the same spot as recording was done) and ringing bells (as a sound propagated through the air from the medium that does not change its position, what changes is the place of recordings).
Enjoy!

The ugly space

From my point of view there is no way to conquest the space, cause space is something metaphysical. Although we have opportunities to alive space. My interest went to alive spaces that we are not really aware of being there, or more concrete “hidden spaces”. The city-life inspired me zooming into the “ugly” spaces,  space people try to avoid or try to hide.It was my aim try to rethink this lost spaces in a way that it will attract people, moreover make people curious as opposed to aversion.

Balance on the Architecture rope

Geplaatst onder Geen categorie op mei 27, 2010 door student2010conquest

The question here is: “What is a space?” “What means it?”
First our approach was to look for the little part who define a space. We saw there is two different spaces, two “startpoint” spaces: architectural space and more “emotional” space. That is interesting to see the evolution to the crosspoint of those two spaces.
Our goal was not to directly build those two spaces because everyone feel a space in his own way. There is a connection between space and man. And here with this experiment we wanted to give the same sensation like we go inside an architectural/emotional space and between them. The distance between both space is sometime close, sometime higher. It is not easy to stay balanced on the rope that binds these two worlds.

As a starting point we took the work team 13 produced.

They worked with claustrophobia so that’s where we started off aswell.

Another imput in our research was stereoscopic imaging, as it is a great way to create a 3d space on a simple 2d suface.

We tried to marry these 2 together, maybe finding a solution to solve claustrophobia with the use of stereoscopic imaging.

First we made some tests if we could really create a deep 3d space with these images. (photo’s of city and house views, red-blue 3d glasses are required to see them)

We can all asume an elevator is a claustrophobic space, so with the use of stereoscopic images we’d like to make the small elevator look a lot bigger, so people don’t get these cramped feelings anymore.

For the display of our work we need an elevator, 3d glasses and perhaps a beamer + laptop to display our research in Cubicconverter.

The elevator is allready taken care of, we will use the one in the Hoogstraat. We’ll provide 3d glasses aswell as the required laptop. For the beamer we would use the one in our regular classroom, or the one on the ground floor in the computer class (if this would be easier). The research can also be presented on e regular laptop. We would also like some time to set up the project.
